She didn&#8217;t get squeamish and Grandpa had much fun showing her a couple of tricks. She remembers it occasionally (surprising what stuff kids can remember) and I figured it&#8217;d be quite fun doing up a make-believe &#8216;fishing\/shrimping experience&#8217; after our recent <strong><a title=\"Beach-in-a-box\" href=\"https:\/\/bigbrownmonster.com\/?p=2722\">beach-in-a-box<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Gotcha!\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5020\/5470861263_0722c0f342_z.jpg\" width=\"501\" height=\"334\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>What you need are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rod\/stick\/bamboo\/rattan&#8230;anything straight and about 75 cm long<\/li>\n<li>toilet roll<\/li>\n<li>cardboard<\/li>\n<li>core of a used roll of thread<\/li>\n<li>ice cream stick<\/li>\n<li>twine (about 1.5 m)<\/li>\n<li>coloring material<\/li>\n<li>sticky\/duct tape<\/li>\n<li>scissors<\/li>\n<li>magnetic stickers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Instructions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I had a bamboo stick with some sharp bits so I taped it up with duct tape.<\/li>\n<li>Make 3 hoops along 3\/4 length of the rod.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Let's go fishing\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8349\/8206141644_8a872f27d5_o.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Now to make the reel mechanism&#8230;..cut 4 holes on the toilet roll &#8211; 2 nearer the top for the rod to go through and 2 near the centre for the core.<\/li>\n<li>Cut about 1.5 m of twine and tie it to the core. Make sure it is tight so that it will not slip when it is being turned.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Let's go fishing\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8204\/8205051251_aa3a77bf4c_o.jpg\" width=\"501\" height=\"334\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assemble the core and rod through the toilet roll.<\/li>\n<li>Pull the end of the twine out of the toilet roll and through the hoops.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Let's go fishing\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8490\/8206142020_2fe6840763_o.jpg\" width=\"501\" height=\"334\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make a &#8216;hook&#8217; with a small piece of triangular cardboard and attach a piece of magnetic sticker to it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Let's go fishing\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8203\/8206141876_2ddce0c39c_o.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"749\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Secure the toilet roll\/reel to the rod. Make stoppers around the openings which the rod had gone through.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Let's go fishing\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8205\/8205051549_ebd4b5bc34_o.jpg\" width=\"501\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure that the reel works ok. It should only retract the twine nicely when the reel is turned. Simply pull the twine at the end of the rod to extend it for &#8216;fishing&#8217;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Let's go fishing\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8337\/8205051691_6ceea9bf9d_o.jpg\" width=\"501\" height=\"350\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Let's go fishing\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8058\/8206142390_f829ec1316_o.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Now it&#8217;s time to make some critters for kiddo. Draw and cut out the animals before adhering magnetic stickers onto them. Since the magnetic stickers are small, make sure the cardboard critters are not too big\/heavy.<\/li>\n<li>Kiddo can help decorate\/colour the critters and rod at this point. Get her to think about what kind of seafood she would see at the fishmarket, what are cooked and how they tasted etc etc&#8230;..<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Let's go fishing\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8481\/8206142508_6e3a2ce974_o.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Last but not least, it&#8217;d be good to sit down with kiddo and encourage her as she tries (over and over) to fish up the critters.
